A PERFECT PERFORMANCE IT IS staat nu hier ook op en als je dan al luisterent naar buiten kijkt krijgt de sneeuw gelijk een andere dementsie LEUKE RECENSIE ATPLAYDOTCOM Most people tend to think there were 4 phases in the Pink Floyd timeline - the Syd Barrett 60s sound; the DSOTM wonder years; the destructive Wall/Final Cut era and the non-Waters years. But there was also the wonderful transition period between the Syd-influenced works and the DSOTM years and the 2 albums that represent that period are Meddle and Atom Heart Mother. DSOTM would overshadow both of these albums in popularity and vision, but neither should be considered inferior works. In a way, AHM and Meddle are like 2 halves of a double album. The musical landscape of the title track of Atom Heart Mother (which took up all of side one of the original vynil release) is indicative of the musical changes happening in Floyd at the time. There are very definite echoes of their former musical styles and Syd Barrett's influence is still there, but there are also hints of the new things to come. As the piece progresses, we seem to be pulled into moments of both clarity and confusion, signified by a battle between themes that are atonal and harmonic - sometimes darkly sinister; other times majestically uplifting. With no side seemingly able to win the fight, orchestral, choral, prog rock and blues all seem to be trying to do their own stuff, with no clear link or reason to be there, yet each section slips from one to the other perfectly. As the piece reaches it's conclusion, we are drawn into a nightmare cacophany of everything we've heard before until, from the mass confusion, the harmonic beauty of the classical theme with choir wins out and takes over for a brief, but stunning finale. That final swell of the theme, full of clarity and brass, reminds one of the closing moments of Stravinsky's The Firebird Suite and the members of the band must surely have been heavilly influenced by that at the time, although there is also something deeply primordial about the entire piece that reminds one of The Rite Of Spring. After all that, the songs that make up the second side of the album may seem a little weak. To be sure, they appear to have little connection with the title track, but listen carefully and you will hear themes that would emerge a few years later on The Wall. Atom Heart Mother is so very easilly dismissed as a minor work in the Floyd catalogue, but the truth is, it's a stunning album in every respect. It was the album that really turned me on to Pink Floyd at least a year before the world went Dark Side crazy. Meddle only intensified what has become a lifelong passion for the genius of Gilmore, Waters, Mason and Wright, but for me, this album was my first real encounter with Pink Floyd. If you like both rock AND classical music, I can't recommend this album highly enough - especially if you like Stravinsky and Bartok. At the time of it's creation, other bands were also begining to experiment with classical themes - ELP, Yes and even Deep Purple - but none created something quite as wonderful, passionate and lasting as Atom Heart Mother. daarne gaat MORE volgen
