Verdict

A deceptively ordinary-looking amp, the NVA rivals more pricey designs with its superb musicianship

This is one excellent amplifier. Solid looking and well-specified - picking it up confirms the weight of multiple power supplies hidden inside its casework - the AP80 majors on drive and clarity. A good way to describe the sound of the 80W per channel NVA is that it has a valve-like lucidity and speed, yet with the battleship-sized weight and control that you get from better transistor designs. It tools along at normal listening levels with infinite ease. With Mighty Sam McLain's I'm Tired of These Blues disc it tosses out the sound of the kick drum, creating a pulse within the room, and excels at sorting instrument separation, giving each both space and definition within a soundstage that conveys the ambiance of a recording situation. Bandwidth is exemplary - the amp providing excellent explosive bass from our Reference disk of Stravinsky's Firebird Suite played by the Minnesota Orchestra. It's dynamically coherent way up into the audio spectrum, with high hats or triangle sounding bright and resonant, and decaying naturally.

As for inputs, the AP80 offers five at line level, plus a tape loop. The speaker outputs require four millimeter plugs - there are no binding posts on the back of the amp - and controls are the bare minimum: you get a source select switch and a volume knob.

Summary:

Stonking amp, real beauty, have to agree with the other guys on this amp. Took a punt on this from ebay based upon reviews and havent been dissapointed. Deep, tight bass, tons of detail and a wonderully "musical" - cliche i know, but it really is. Was running a Naim 202/200 setup before this, compared to the Naim the NVA background is inky black and instruments can be heard for what they are. So surprised this integrated is outperforming the Naim setup for a third of the price too. Ok, the case is made of plastic but that is supposed to assist in lowering noise, but under the hood this baby has 2 transformers per channel - this thing weighs a ton!! I listen to mostly rock, indie but for some reason after owning this amp for 6 months im now starting to enjoy classical music, this amp really does open up your musical horizons. I must admit that I was worried about losing PRaT by moving away from Naim, but no fear, the NVA has it in spade. Really fine amp.

Strengths:

Fast, dynamic, detailed and.... musical as hell.

Weaknesses:

God it's heavy!!!

Grappig zelfs CD-spelers heeft de man gedaan in het verleden, maar hij verkoopt ook nog eigen ontwerp luidsprekers, demo's:

NVA CUBIX Loudspeaker System

Designed as a semi omni to integrate with the room acoustic instead of fighting it the way normal speakers do. Upward firing bass driver means the bass notes are in phase with the mechanical coupling as opposed to being 90deg out of phase as with normal speakers. This gives very tight and musical bass. There is no crossover on the bass / mid driver as the driver is doped and designed to attenuate naturally and also the higher the frequency the more directional the signal is so the driver position naturally attenuates as well. Tweeter is a high quality and well established Danish design. There is a single very expensive paper in oil capacitor as the low frequency protection for the tweeter, so effectively this is a crossover less loudspeaker which is of great benefit to the musical reproduction.
