iferreira Posted 5 mei 2003 Report Share Posted 5 mei 2003 I am interested in starting a once a month audiophiles group that meets at my home near Gouda. I would like to limit the group to 4 (myself included) and meet for about an hour and a half in the evening. Each person will bring a selection of about 3 songs for the evening and we will listen and critique equipment/the music. Audiophiles wanting to bring equipment to test are encouraged. Interested in grouping with folks having a broad range of musical tastes and listening experience. This is not an opportunity to have a party. This is for those with a critical ear, serious about listening to music critically and sharing good music. Please email me if you are interested at isaac@onlinetransmissions.comnull
Hi-Fifi Posted 5 mei 2003 Report Share Posted 5 mei 2003 Hello, Have you already spoken out your ideas at a local dealer? I mean, did you speak to any costumers and have you tried your ideas about this item on people yet? I think there will be people interrested in your `listening

DVD Fiel Posted 5 mei 2003 Report Share Posted 5 mei 2003 Normally I would have been interested (I live in Gouda), but: 1. I'm not really interested in serious, high brow discussions about equipment. My set can probably be improved dramatically, but I'm happy with it, and I'm not overly interested in investing money or time in upgrading it. 2. Music is something you should enjoy, rather than listen to it 'critically'. At any rate, if you are interested in grabbing a beer, and just talk (as in small talk, not debate or discuss) about music I'm game.
Henno Appel Posted 6 mei 2003 Report Share Posted 6 mei 2003 My set can probably be improved dramatically, but I'm happy with it, and I'm not overly interested in investing money or time in upgrading it. You are afraid that such a discussion group is costing you een hoop centjes, because they are kraaking your set af, and the only way om er nog bij te horen is bying expensive apparatuur. Gelijk heb je.
iferreira Posted 6 mei 2003 Author Report Share Posted 6 mei 2003 Hello everyone, I am glad to see that there is an interest in my idea for an audiophile group. Unfortunately I must limit the group to 4 becuase I have 2 small kids and it would become noisy, also more people would not be able to sit in a good listening position. Yes, I do want the discussion to be 'critical' but not to the extreme. I wanted to be as clear as possible about the intentions for the group so that everyone joining shares the same interest, increasing the chances that there is a good chemistry within the group -with that said, I dont want to appear an extremist because neither my ear nor my equipment can stand up to such scrutiny. So to be clear, I want to form a group which stays on topic but is not snobbish in it discussions.

I think the comments in the previous messages about keeping the group together are right. It is important to me to have this be consistent. The main reasons is because it is only once a month and the group is small. A missing person here or there is normal, but any more often wouldn't make the commitment so interesting because cancellations can stretch gatherings 2 and even 3 months. You end up losing track of it and the group disbands.

iferreira Posted 7 mei 2003 Author Report Share Posted 7 mei 2003 Yes, an opportunity to improve your english and my dutch. I am not a Dutch native, I am Portuguese by birth and raised in America. I work here in Holland while my wife does her doctoral studies at Leiden university. As to the 'Why?' question previously posed: I am new here in Holland, I'd like to make more aquaintances. I have been an audiophile since I was a teenager and I want to share my interest and my musical taste with other like minded individuals. I hope this serves to shed some light on my intentions. Also, some write: 'I am not interested in joining'. Ok, but it comes as no surprise to me that there would be many uninterested people, so mentioning it on the board serves little purpose. If you arent interested, ignore the thread. To others truly interested, feel free to also email me directly at isaac@onlinetransmissions.com
spido Posted 13 mei 2003 Report Share Posted 13 mei 2003 Starting a group of audiophiles strikes me as a very, very risky idea indeed! In the first place, there is the possibility of actual physical violence between the members of the group in case of disagreement on the qualities of a piece of audio equipment. Audiophiles are not especially renowned for their psychological stability, mind you! Secondly, I think it is good to point out that a real, i.e. a physical present group of probably agressive, monomanial compulsive-obsessive neurotics could very easily be caught, captured, and transported in a softly lined ambulance towards an asylum where they only play stomach turning muzak... Henno Appel Posted 13 mei 2003 Report Share Posted 13 mei 2003 In the first place, there is the possibility of actual physical violence But not only that..., also some material damage can occur. For example; if you invite Mr. Speakerfarmer ( ) for joining one of your club-sessions, and there are some electrostatic panels in the room, the chance is very big that Mr. Speakerfarmer is going to penetrate the panels with (empty-eatened) Sat
