Scat-Man Posted 19 juni 2005 Report Share Posted 19 juni 2005 Ik zit me te verlekkeren voor deze dvd Buena Vista Social Club Kijk hier dan ook eens naar : There's a line between irony and honesty, and depending on the international music fan, to them, an album by Jack "Mr. Bongo" Costanzo will probably fall on one side of that line and not the other. And it's quite possible that certain people will cross over that line, like myself. At one point, I loved to listen to my Learn, Play Bongos edutainment record that I picked up in a thrift, because it was ironic. Then after a while it became fun, and listening to it was no longer ironic for me, but an honest thrill. But no matter how many listens, my drumming didn't get too good. I guess there's only so much you can learn from a record. A number of things have been said about Costanzo over the years. He's been called heavy-handed, and clumsy. He's been credited as having been an important part of moving Stan Kenton's Latin-flavored jazz beyond the West Coast jazz gutter. He's been seen in recent years as a lounge music icon, thanks, no doubt, to the Ultra-Lounge series (Bongo Land anyone?), and the renewed interest which years back lead to the reissue of Mr. Bongo Plays Cha Cha Cha (57), the reissue of Mr. Bongo Jack Costanzo And His Afro Cuban Band in 98, a reissue of Latin Percussion With Soul (68) from Tico records, as well as a number of individual songs which continue to keep popping up on compilations all over the place. Is it time for Costanzo to once again get his due? Clearly. And this should be the album that does it. Costanzo has laid low for some time. Rice and Beans, his last release, was an EP that came out last year. That, along with Back From Havana is like a reincarnation of a Latin pop icon. Back From Havana is Costanzo's first new album in 25 years. Take for example his latest reworking of "La La La". Taking up the vocals of a woman named Marilu, this excellent dance number is transformed from a relatively straight-forward piece into a lush, sensual exercise in excitement and catchy addictiveness. The whole album almost hinges on the freneticism and energy of this second song, pulling every other song into its dangerous vortex. "Descarga.com", the first song, is carried through between Costanzo's conga work and the delicate piano work of Lynn Willard. "En La Noche" is a great exploration of Latin jazz fused with a Boogaloo fused with a cha cha. It's a strange step in terms of Latin jazz but it's highly intriguing. "Jive Samba" is another version of Costanzo covering Cannonball Adderly's song, and it's tight, strong, and stunningly good. Part of what makes this album so fine is that it isn't caught up in a rock stance, nor is it trapped in a narrow cultural focus. Sure, it's still Latin jazz at core, but both modern and timeless. If you wondered what happened to Mr. Bongo, wonder no more. He is perhaps more alive than ever. Standouts: "Jive Samba", "La La La", "Mantequilla", "Jack's Back" Buy: Ubiquity By: Forestter Cobalt
